Our History

The Chapman Branch of the Women’s Institute was organized May 23, 1950. The meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Harry Coulter with 19 Ladies present. The meeting was presided over by Mrs. Thos. Leslie, District President of East Hastings W.I., Mrs. Harry Sills, the incoming District President was also present. An executive was duly elected and the new Branch flourished.

- It was moved by Mrs. H. Coulter and seconded that Mrs. Albert (Isobel) Martin be President of our new organization. Carried.

- Moved by Mrs. C. Jeffrey and seconded that Mrs. C. Fisher be our 1st Vice President. Carried.

- Moved by Mrs. W. LaBerge, and seconded, that Mrs. H. Coulter be our 2nd Vice President.  Carried.

- Moved by Mrs. H Countryman and seconded, that Mrs. R. Wheeler be Secretary-Treasurer.  Carried.

Convenors were appointed for the standing committees.   Mrs Harry Sills, incoming District President gave a very interesting paper on the origin and growth of the W.I.   The fees were .50 cents per year.   The meeting closed by singing, "God Save the King".

Over the years we have supported 4-H, many quilts made and donated to fire victims, and catering to weddings, to name only a few.   In more recent years we supplied and served soup luncheons to farmers involved in Agricultural Workshops.

Fast forward to 2019, we have donated to the G.Magnotta Foundation, University of Guelph, to assist in the science and research to find a cure for LYME DISEASE.     Our branch of 14 members continue to work together in friendship for the betterment of Home & Country and we look forward to celebrating our 70th Anniversary in May of 2020
